Flat blazes highlight importance of fire detection & alarm systems
A man has died following a fire in a residential block of flats on Westmoreland Drive in Sutton, which was attended by crews from the London Fire Brigade.
Two fire engines and around ten firefighters from Sutton and Wallington fire stations responded to the incident in the early hours of yesterday morning (October 18th).
Around one quarter of the second-floor flat was damaged by fire, although no injuries were reported as six people self-evacuated the block before the brigade arrived on the scene.
The cause of the fire was not immediately established, but the incident came in the wake of another blaze in a four-storey block of flats on Longbridge Way in Lewisham on October 17th.
Crews from Lewisham, Greenwich and Lee Green fire stations attended the incident, which resulted in the hospitalisation of two people, although around 20 self-evacuated the block before firefighters arrived.
Both incidents highlight the importance of fire detection and alarm systems, which are designed to provide an early warning to allow people to escape whenever an inferno starts.
