Fire Damage costs up a whopping 16%
The cost of fire damage in the UK rose by 16% last year to a record £1.3 billion, according to figures recently announced by the Association of British Insurers.
Commercial fire damage cost £865 million, up 15% on the previous year, while school fires alone cost £33 million, with a serious school fire occurring – on average – every month. Fire damage to homes cost £408 million, up 17% on the previous year.
There has been a marked increase in what is termed large loss fires (those over half-a-million). It’s believed that fraudulent arson and arson in general are both factors. Modern materials used in construction have also been mentioned as possible other causes.
