Dangerous lesson learned due to disabled smoke alarm
The importance of properly maintaining fire alarms has been highlighted by a case in Sheffield.
Two men were rescued from a flat in Broomhall by fire fighters after their chip pan caught fire while they were asleep.
However, authorities were only alerted when a fire alarm in a nearby flat detected the smoke pouring from the neighbouring property.
When inspecting the scene after the fire had been put out, the fire crew found that the flat’s own smoke alarm had been disabled by cling film draped across the sensor.
According to watch manager Jim Moll, the incident should act as a message to others about the importance of adequate fire safety.
“This incident demonstrates, once more, the importance of properly maintaining and testing a working smoke alarm,” he commented.
“By covering up the smoke alarm, this incident could easily have been much worse, potentially resulting in these two young men’s deaths.”
Today (November 10th) saw the evacuation of Birmingham New Street station after multiple fire alarms sounded in a false scare.
